Big-box and department stores often sell their returned merchandise, end-of-season inventory and items that just didn't sell well at a substantial discount below wholesale prices.

That merchandise is contracted for sale through distributors and third-party services for sale by the truckload.

The buyer, such as your small business, can specify what type of merchandise it wants to buy -- electronics, toys or clothing, for example. Merchandise is also available by the truckload from manufacturers and wholesalers. A business license is required, and you also may need a sales tax license, even if you plan to sell to people who will resell your merchandise to the final consumer.

The sales tax license is often a requirement for wholesalers, manufacturers or third-party liquidators to give you a discount. Additionally, an Employer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service will be needed to open a business bank account.

Buying merchandise by the truckload requires a significant amount of cash, for purchase, delivery and storage. Some manufacturers and wholesalers offer payment terms, such as 30 to 90 days, to pay for the products.

Liquidators and retailers may not offer payment terms. A revolving credit line, a short-term loan and your own personal credit cards are financing options. Start the financing process well in advance of purchasing the products, as it takes time to get everything in place. You don't want to contract to buy the products, then not have the funds to fulfill the contract.

Search for vendors who specialize in large orders. Some online examples can be found in the References section. Wholesalers are another option.

If your order is large enough, it makes sense to deal directly with the manufacturer, rather than a distributor. Inventory liquidators are another option for large quantities. Your garage fills up pretty fast with large orders. Your current retail location may not have the space for additional products. Arrange for outside storage facilities.

Rent a warehouse or part of a warehouse. Keep in mind that trucks require additional space for parking and maneuvering.

You may also have to rent or buy a forklift to unload crates or large boxes from trucks. It may be cheaper to arrange your own transportation than rely on the liquidator, manufacturer or wholesaler to deliver the products. In some cases, you must provide your own transportation outright.

If you plan to buy products by the truckload on a regular basis, consider buying or leasing your own truck. If not, there are trucking companies you can hire to pick up and deliver shipments.
