I'm kind of special case. I've been teaching BJJ free of charge for the past 8 years at a not-for-profit club. I have a day job and am not motivated to make money from BJJ.

We do however collect membership dues to cover our facility, mats, etc. After seeing how many students you need to just cover rent and utilities, it would be a really tough way to make a living. You also have to acknowledge that you're going to spend 10 years "getting your education" to get to your black belt. In that same time frame, you could get any number of degrees and be well into the money-making years.

The guys that are making the money above 6-figures are household names and have alternate income streams beyond their gyms: While you can absolutely make a living as an instructor, most of them don't make near enough given the time and energy that they put into running their schools.

It's probably not much of a profit, but it may be, depending on their business savvy. This is exactly why most schools struggle. You NEED to run a kids class.

You need to run a women's boxercise, or whatever training is in vogue a the moment. You need to run a bootcamp conditioning class.

You need to have hard contracts. Most people have no idea what it costs to run a business and make it successful.

This, and if you don't actually own the school and are simply working as an instructor there. If you are going for a Liberal Arts degree you are probably in the same ballpark i wouldn't recommend a liberal arts degree but that's another conversation.

I know a few people who run MA schools my past teachers and none of them have talked highly about it as a way to make money. All struggled just to keep it afloat - even the ones who are savvy in business. I'm a white belt and only assisting in kid's classes and that's just about what I get. Nah, only one high five per day. My coach has been building his kids class and while he's actually a really good kids teacher, every time I walk in and see that line growing all I can see are dollar signs over each little kid's head.
